So how do you play tennis? As the old saying goes, “If at first you don’t succeed, try following the directions!”

Before you spend a dime on tennis lessons, READ THIS BLOG and learn why the “old world tennis coach” is obsolete, and how tennis instruction online is the way of the future!  Private tennis lessons are expensive (and most of the time they’re a total rip-off!)  Group tennis lessons are a little more affordable, but they don’t provide specialized attention. Most teaching pros are nothing more than glorified ball machines that shout benign instructions every once in a while.  Their mantra usually sounds something like this: “Racket back — Bend your knees — Give me $100 please!”

Outrageous!

However, through this blog, you can access THE BEST BEGINNER TENNIS COACH IN THE WORLD, 24 hours a day!  Our “Beginner Tennis Instruction Videos” and  printable “How To Play Tennis Process Maps” make learning simple.

In other words, if you are brand new to the game of tennis, congratulations! You’ve come to the right place!

Learning how to play tennis can be a frustrating experience. The number of details required to hit a ball over the net, again and again, can seem overwhelming at first — but so was driving a car for the first time (especially a stick shift!)  On day one, driving a car was a real challenge! Clutch, shift, gas, steer, watch the road— aaagh!  With so many things happening at once, driving may have even seemed impossible at first (particularly if you also had a mom or dad screaming in your ear at the same time!)

But, with a little persistence, before you knew it you were driving like a pro, and all of the tiny steps that went into it, simply merged into one simple action you didn’t even have to think about anymore.  Now-a-days, all you have to do is get in the car and go where you want to go—it’s automatic and effortless!

With our video lessons, the same thing will happen with your tennis game!

HOW TO PLAY TENNIS VS. HOW TO WIN TENNIS MATCHES

Legendary tennis coach Ed Faulkner said it best when he described tennis as a “civilized form of hand to hand combat.” Winning a tennis match is similar to winning a boxing match. It is a battle of coordination, strength, endurance, will and strategy.

If you are a tennis beginner (or you need to break old habits) we are NOT going to worry about “winning tennis matches” right now. Instead, we will focus on “how to play tennis.”

“How To Play Tennis” means coordinating our body, footwork, and racket swing – three things at once — to generate massive power, WITH EASE!

It is NOT our goal to make you the best hacker among the hackers, but to transform you into a real tennis player with beautiful strokes and movement.  To do this, we will model ourselves after ANDRE AGASSI.

As a little boy, Andre Agassi’s father, Mike Agassi, trained Andre to hit the ball as HARD as he could. Mike was a professional boxer. He taught Andre the body mechanics of a lethal, right cross (which are the same mechanics as a lethal forehand.)  Mike knew that if Andre had perfect form, he would be able to generate ridiculous power. It didn’t matter if Andre hit thousands of balls into the fence. Get the power first, then learn to control it.

THE SAME ADVICE IS TRUE FOR YOU!

How To Play Tennis like Andre Agassi

Did you ever see the baseball movie “Major League?” Do you remember the character “Rick Vaughn/ The Wild Thing” played by Charlie Sheen?  “The Wild Thing” had a 100 mph fast ball pitch! He had perfect form and body mechanics, but zero accuracy!

As you start your tennis career, think about being like “The Wild Thing.” Think about hitting the ball HARD! Breathe, grunt, get your aggression out, and have some fun with this thing! It’s a blast hitting the ball as hard as you can! It feels wonderful!

LEARNING HOW TO PLAY TENNIS BEGINS WITH THE PROPER TENNIS GRIPS

semi-western forehand grip

Perhaps the most confusing and poorly explained, yet important aspect of tennis mastery, are the tennis grips.

If you are a tennis beginner, or unhappy with your ability to control the ball’s accuracy, power, or spin, the first thing we need to perfect are your tennis grips.  For some of you, the proper tennis grip are going to feel awkward. PUSH THROUGH IT! If you are holding the racket incorrectly, it doesn’t matter how many YEARS you play the game, you will NEVER be a real tennis player.

It’s a little difficult to explain the nuances of tennis grips using words, it is much easier to just see it. So get your FREE Beginner Tennis Lesson #1 and How To Play Tennis Process Maps you will understand EVERYTHING about tennis grips in minutes.

There are four basic grips in tennis: Eastern Grip, Continental Grip, Western Grip and Semi Western Grip.

Look carefully at the racket handle. It is an 8 sided solid. Each side has a tedious name, so to keep things simple we’ll just give each side a number.  Holding the racket perpendicular to the ground, the flat plane on “top” will be 1. Moving clockwise, the “right bevel” will be 2. Next, the “right vertical panel” will be 3, and so on.

tennis grips hand guide

To find the correct grip, place the heel of the hand (the red dot) and the base knuckle of the index finger (the green dot) on the proper corresponding numbers. (This chart is for right handed players.)

The forehand grip most professionals use is the Semi Western Grip (red 3, green 4,) or to generate massive topspin, the Western Grip (red 4, green 5.) Old fashioned tennis players like John McEnroe and Chris Evert use the Eastern Forehand Grip (red 2, green 3) but I would not recommend this tennis grip for today’s game.

The backhand grip for a topspin, two handed backhand is the Eastern Grip (red 1 , green 1.) Or for a one handed topspin backhand consider the Extreme Eastern Grip (red 1 , green 8). For a slice backhand, use the Continental grip (red 1 , green 2.)

The service grip and volley also use the Continental grip (red 1, green 2.)

It is essential that tennis beginners learn how to quickly transition from one grip to another without looking at the handle. The wrong grip results in improper racket positioning and, to compensate, you will do all kinds of crazy motions to hit the ball square and get it over the net.

You may have heard that “practice makes perfect?” Untrue! “Practice makes permanent!” So do yourself a favor and start with proper tennis instruction.  Learn the correct tennis grips first, and then practice them until they become automatic. Get your FREE Beginner Tennis Lesson #1 for simple grip exercises you can practice around the house.  All it takes is a few minutes a day! Before you know it you’ll be able to switch from the forehand to backhand tennis grip in your sleep. Let’s play tennis!

TENNIS IS A GAME OF PHYSICS. UNDERSTANDING “MOMENTUM” IS THE KEY.

tennis forehand

Tennis beginners you are in luck!  By teaching you one basic physics concept, momentum, we can break your tennis instruction down into three simple bite size pieces. Now don’t flip out if you failed physics in high school, what we are going to show you is super-duper easy.  All you need to know is one basic equation.

Momentum = Mass X Velocity

For those of you that are more visual, it will be easier for you to understand this tennis lesson by “seeing it” rather than reading it, so please get your FREE “Beginner Tennis Lesson #1” and “How to Play Tennis Process Maps” and you will understand everything about momentum in five minutes. Whether you watch the video or continue to read the blog, it is crucial that you to get your brain around this tennis lesson. It’s simple and totally worth it!

So how do we get the tennis ball to achieve maximum momentum? There are 3 things to consider:

A. The speed of your racket swing (it is best to have a continuous looping swing!)

B. The speed and direction your body is moving (it is best to be moving forward!)

C. The speed of the approaching ball (it is best to get the ball on the rise!)

a.) loop the backswing b) move forward c)get the ball on the rise

a.) loop the backswing b) move forward c)get the ball on the rise

By controlling these three factors, you can control the MOMENTUM of the tennis ball and constantly put your opponent on the defensive. Learn everything about momentum in minutes. Get “Tennis Lesson #1″ right now! It’s FREE and will teach you “the forehand” in 3 EASY STEPS!

Picture a bullet in your hand. To keep the math easy, let’s say the “mass” of the bullet weighs 1kg. Now imagine that you throw the bullet at a big tree and the bullet travels at a “velocity” of 10m/s (meters per second.)  What is the momentum of the bullet?  Let’s plug the numbers into the equation.

Mass X Velocity = Momentum

1kg   X  10m/s  =  10 units of momentum

Big deal right? You throw a 1kg bullet at a speed of 10m/s toward a tree. It bounces off the tree and probably doesn’t even make a dent in the bark. Why? Because the bullet hardly has any momentum. However, what if instead of throwing the bullet, you shoot it out of a rifle? The 1kg bullet now travels toward the tree at a “velocity” of 1000 m/s. What is the momentum?

Mass X Velocity = Momentum

1kg  X 1000m/s = 1000 units of momentum

Big difference right? The same 1kg bullet traveling at velocity of1000m/s is definitely going to blast a hole into the tree. Obviously, the faster the bullet travels, the more momentum it has. The same principal applies to a tennis ball. The faster the tennis ball travels toward your opponent, the more momentum it has, and the more difficult it will be for your opponent to get it back. (You can also think of the ball’s momentum as the force, or power, or energy of the ball. All of these concepts are closely related to momentum because they all incorporate mass and velocity.)
